Paulie's Pizza is now open, next to Relic's on Madison, where Brickyard Pizza used to be. I haven't been yet, but I've heard good things, and the menu is huge, lots more than just pizza!

And do come out for Downtown Nights tomorrow night! Shop, then eat (cuz the restaurants are open later), and enjoy all the events - live music, art openings, and I've heard that an artist will be painting on the bricks!

I know I'm kind of harping on this, but seriously, Thomasville Landmarks' Derby Party is going to be tons of fun, and it's their only fundraiser of the year!

Quiet Week

All in all, it's a bit quiet this week in Tville, but here are a few things to put on your dance card.

Of course, you should definitely go to the Book-a-lunch at the Bookshelf with author Jon Jefferson. Jefferson Bass' book The Bone Thief debuted at #24 last week on the New York Times bestseller list and his co-author Jon Jefferson will make a book tour stop at the Bookshelf + Gallery for a luncheon lecture. Jefferson has been published in the New York Times + broadcast on NPR. The co-author of Death's Acre, he is also the writer and producer of two highly rated National Geographic documentaries about the Body Farm.

$15 pp, pre-registration required. Wednesday, April 7, 12 PM- 1 PM.

Also on Wednesday, Arts for the Community at Thomas University will present a one-act sampler of Shakespearean scenes for its spring theatre production.
2:00 PM at the newly renovated and relocated playhouse on campus at 1501 Millpond Rd. The performance is free and open to the public with seating on the lawn.

You should also pre-register for Cheese of the Pacific Northwest at Liam’s. These classes always book up, so book early.

I came, I saw, I lurve!

You can once again cruise in the back door at Relish - right into Dash, the running store. Truth be told, and many of you know, I am NOT a runner. But I am married to one, and I do love to walk. I think a brisk walk qualifies as a Dash, don't you?

Anyway, they've got scads of clothing from Alternative Apparel, which is all made from the absolute softest material known to man. Remember how cuddly that Relish Oyster Jam shirt was last year? Yup, Alternative Apparel.

They even have Chafe Stick, like a D.O. stick for legs that tend to rub, and MosquitNo, a natural, wearable mosquito repellent. They're still getting in new stuff, so there's more to come!

The Nutty Cheesy Salad is BACK at Cafe Marebella! Remember that one? It was on the lunch menu - sooo good. I have friends who would only order that. Nothing else. It's that good. (If you like nuts + cheese!)

They've had so many requests for it that they've put it on the dinner menu!

They're releasing the first batch of goat cheese for the year including:

Fresh Chevre- Pasteurized, fresh spreadable goats milk cheese

Lumiere- A soft ripened goats milk cheese wrapped and layered in grapevine ash

Relish just gets fabulouser every time I go there. I popped in last Saturday and they started feeding me chocolates!

Did you know that they have samples on Saturdays?? The chocolates were delirium-inducing. Seriously. One had a cinnamon honey filling and it was like eating cinnamon-sugar toast dipped in chocolate. Wow.

And, before you ask, yes, they’re better than Godiva. Much. They’re a brand called Antoine Amrani and some of their other far-from-boring flavors include Coconut Kaffir Lime, Earl Grey, + Coffee Sour Cherry. Not your average chocolates, for sure, and they’re so decadent you could serve them for dessert.

It's a play about mentally handicapped men - it's a comedy, but it still manages to keep from mocking the characters. It's being directed by Clay Byers. And to update you on the Antiques Show, the preview party was packed and tons of fun! Today's lecture by P. Allen Smith was funny and I learned some things. Among those somethings, I learned was that there is such a thing as "heritage poultry." You've heard of heirloom seeds? It's like that. But with chickens. It's about preserving good bloodlines. All in all, very interesting, and he did talk about gardening, too. And Nesmith Nursery was there with some lovely spring specimens! I spent some time briefly with Gil Schafer as well, and I'm looking forward to his lecture tomorrow. You know he learned to ride at the Pebble Hill stables?

I cruised by the Relic's sale (corner of Madison + Smith) and got myself a HUGE ornate frame with a very old photo in it - 50% off! It was a steal for sure. I also went by At Home (on Broad) and they've got some super-chic glass platters and pillows, all with a spring/bird/nest motif. Darling!

Gettin' Things Done the Old Fashioned Way

After a big smashy-smashy downtown, many in the community are concerned for the future of our historic (and soon-to-be historic) downtown buildings. Did you know that someone, anyone, can buy a historic building downtown and bulldoze it to the ground? Just about any of them. In a day.

Recently a perfectly good building, in need of some renovation, was demolished. The architecture, history and embodied energy (takes more energy to make the same thing again), was gone. Thomasville Landmarks, whose mission is to preserve, protect and promote the architecture, history and culture of our county, was interested in moving the house - at no charge to the owner - and even had a buyer. But the owner was not sympathetic and after having agreed to the deal, they crushed the house anyway. Which was their right.

The question is, does the town have rights? Do we, collectively, have a right to protect what makes our town beautiful, interesting, historic, tour-able and profitable? It's partially an issue of property rights, and partially one of good community citizenry and a balance of interests.

So here's what Landmarks is proposing. In the interest of community protection, they're putting forth a good old-fashioned petition for a demolition ordinance. They're proposing that 90 days be given to the community to evaluate the significance of a structure, and potentially have it moved or salvaged, prior to demolition. Landmarks has committed to providing consultation, evaluation and possible financial assistance to the owners.

It's a win-win for the community and the owner - the community gets the opportunity to maintain its cultural heritage and the owner gets assistance in evaluation and removal. If the 90 days are up and nothing can be done, they still have every right to bulldoze the property.

Small Town Recap + Events This Week

I went to the Small Town Sexy reception tonite and it was awesome! Kim Huston is really passionate about small town living, and about making it great. She talked about the great things small towns have to offer (community, beauty, safety, etc.) and how to really get your small town going (centralized development with city, county, and all entities on the same page).

One thing she mentioned was particularly interesting - how to get young people to return. She's going to start polling folks and asking "What do you need in order to return to a small community? What kinds of services and incentives would make it attractive?"

Winter Artist Showcase!

The Thomasville Cultural Center is hosting a Winter Artist Showcase, opening January 15th and running through February 27.

The featured artists are painter Nancy Mills (Vicar of Good Shepherd Episcopal), painter Rhonda Foster (owner of Liam's) and folk carver O.L. Samuels. Each of these artists communicates their own way of seeing things, from bright to rustic to mysterious.

There will be a reception and an artist talk on the 15th, from 6-9, that should be especially engaging.

Relish.................. is opening a RUNNING STORE!!

That's right - they'll still be Relish in the front, but it'll be running in the back! They'll still have wine and cheese to take away, along with all the kitchen goodies, but no more cafe. And no more "meet me in my office, you know, Relish." You know who you are. (me included!)

I Know, I Know - What Took So Long?

So we finally switched to a local bank. We've used a national bank for years and years, before we even moved to this fair town. Why the switch? We were fed up with the nickel-and-dime fees (did you know they can charge for correcting the math on your deposit??), and we were tired of getting customer service from far, far away.

We went local for better service, to keep more of our money in the local economy - and to support a business that supports so much in our community. Now, when I have a question, I can call someone who actually knows who I am. What a refreshing thought!

Wheeew! That was a whirlwind tour of family homes - great to see everyone, but great to be back!

T-ville's usually pretty laid back in January - but let's see if we can hunt up some things to do.

Sundays at Four is happening Jan. 10th - Thomas University sponsors local and regional musical groups. 4 pm. at the Cultural Center, donations are accepted.

Liam's is hosting another cheese class - this time it's Norway and Denmark! It's Jan. 19th + 20th, be sure to reserve your seats early.

Relish - why isn't there one of these on every corner?? It just feels like home. But with a better kitchen, a stocked pantry, a cook, and built in friends. Again, why is there not one of these on every corner?

Knowing people everywhere I go - I tend to underrate this, especially when I am in sweats and looking shabby, but seriously, it's nice.

Liam's - particularly their Saturday brunch. Have you had it? If so, I needn't say more. Two words: croque monsieur. Oh, third word: mimosas.

Thomasville Landmarks and the Bookshelf + Gallery are hosting a special screening and discussion of the film OURTOWN. The film follows the struggle of one community, challenged by the largest corporation in the world. Ultimately, the film asks the questions: what kind of town do you want to live in and who holds the power to determine the fate of your community? Landmarks believes that citizen activism has the greatest power to create positive change in our communities and to preserve the character of what already exists.

When: Friday, December 4, 8:00 p.m.
Where: Bookshelf Gallery

On Thursday you’ve got a double treat downtown! Starting at 10 AM you’ve got a Slane & Slane Trunk Show at Jergers – and they’re doing some giveaways too! Lost in Yonkers

I've been hearing great things about TOSAC's performances of Lost in Yonkers! I saw some actors in costume during Downtown Nights and it certainly piqued my interest. Those who've been lucky enough to attend have told me they had a phenomenal time!

Lost in Yonkers is set in New York during WWII and it's considered a comedy, even though it explores serious themes like survival and acceptance.

Is there anything townier than going to see local theatre?
